BDT COLUMBUS OFFICE FEATURED IN AIA BIKE TOUR

Columbus AIA design:ROLLS Bike Tour featured the Columbus BDT office as its first of six stops along a 4.5-mile route. BDT staffers Nicholas Bittner, Melissa Bittner, and Don Dispenza—along with Don’s son, Sam—welcomed a group of 14 bicyclists on Sunday, October 14. Participants warmed up with hot cider and coffee as they toured the airy, newly renovated office before venturing back out into the chilly afternoon. Other destinations included The View on Grant, Canopy by Hilton, the Michael B. Coleman Government Center, Columbus Idea Foundry, and Land Grant Brewery. This introduction to Columbus highlighted sustainable architectural approaches, including innovative options for transportation, living space, work spaces, production, and recreation.

Canopy by Hilton – 77 E. Nationwide Blvd.

This is one of the first of a new line of urban hotels under the Hilton brand, and features nine stories of guestrooms and a rooftop restaurant and terrace. The project, designed by Braun & Steidl Architects, is located at the former site of Trott & Bean, a notable Columbus architectural firm during the 1980s.

Michael B. Coleman Government Center – 111 N. Front St.

This is an eight-story, 180,000-sq.-ft. office building designed collaboratively by Schooley Caldwell and Design Group. It houses the departments of Building and Zoning Services, Public Services, Public Utilities, and Development.

Columbus Idea Foundry – 421 W. State St.

Triad Architects designed this 60,000-sq.-ft. adaptive reuse of a former motorcycle dealership and shoe factory. The building is now the largest maker space in the country, and features workshops with high- and low-tech equipment available for use by members, as well as coworking spaces and event space.

Land Grant – 424 W. Town St.

Land Grant is a craft brewery and taproom located in the East Franklinton neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. The company has been exploring how to make more sustainable a business that by definition requires significant resources. In an effort to think differently in this industry, Land Grant recently started a sustainable program aimed at improving energy efficiency, water stewardship, supply-chain management, and waste management, among other green initiatives.
