Designing and implementing a multi-phase, multi-year municipal wayfinding plan (Phase One completed; Phase Two in process)
While the City of Mandan was founded in 1881 as the center for western expansion of the railroad, it is currently the county seat for Morton County—and, along with neighboring Bismarck, a regional retail and trade center. Mandan’s slogan, “Where the West Begins,” defines the community’s primary events, along with its rugged location and storied heritage—first as a village for the Mandan tribe, then as a cavalry fort and hub for area ranchers and farmers.
The community required a comprehensive wayfinding signage program that could both replace older signage and direct locals and visitors to many primary locations. In a multi-phased implementation, designers incorporated the city’s branding elements into the new signage, collaborated with the FHWA & NDDOT to establish sign locations on many major roadways, and oversaw sign manufacture and installation. Phases Two (underway) and Three will expand the system to include secondary roads and identification signage.
