An inside look at our project at OSU Wexner Medical Center’s Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care
The Martha Morehouse Outpatient Care facility, part of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, serves hundreds of patients each day across numerous specialized departments. Over the years, incremental renovations and departmental shifts left the building with a layout that was challenging for both patients and staff to navigate. In 2019, BDT began a small renovation project that morphed into a 5-year multi-phased improvement of patient experience, staff efficiency, and the overall function of this heavily used facility.
BDT Architects & Designers led the transformation, renovating over 105,000 square feet of interior space across more than 15 specialized departments. The project centered on accessibility, clarity, and comfort by prioritizing the needs of patients in areas like Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Urgent Care, and Comprehensive Weight Management. A new 7,000 square foot addition expanded key services including registration, waiting areas, lab facilities, and staff offices, all designed to improve patient flow and streamline operations.
One of the most visible enhancements is the second-floor expansion, designed beneath a light-filled atrium with flexible, comfortable seating areas. This space brings calm and warmth to the clinical environment, supporting emotional well-being for patients, families, and staff alike.

A core design goal was to create a more intuitive, human-centered experience where patients feel confident moving through the building without confusion or stress. Clear circulation pathways, reconfigured layouts, and cohesive design language replaced the previous patchwork of disconnected spaces. Previously compartmentalized floors were opened through strategic demolition and the introduction of glass barriers, improving visibility between departments and across levels. Wayfinding was completely overhauled, and signage was redesigned to help visitors orient themselves with ease. This dramatically reduces the need for staff guidance and intervention.
The project team worked closely with the medical center to ensure the architectural vision aligned with institutional goals. In doing so, the renovation not only improved flow and departmental integration, but also supported the OSU Wexner Medical Center’s mission of providing compassionate, high-quality care.
Equally important was the thoughtful use of resources. Rather than pursue excessive new construction, the team focused on renovating and optimizing what already existed. Much of the original infrastructure was retained and adapted, including reuse of furniture and building systems. Strategic roof and envelope repairs extended the building’s lifespan, while landscape and parking improvements added functional value without overcomplicating the scope. The result is a high-performing, cost-effective facility that meets current demands and supports future flexibility.
