Ohio University’s campus in Chillicothe replaced an uncovered pedestrian skywalk with an inviting translucent crossing. The resulting Shoemaker Bridge acts as a pedestrian link between the Shoemaker Center and an adjacent commuter parking lot.
The scope of the redesign and renovation included the addition of a lighted, covered walkway that gives sanctuary from the elements, safe passage to and from the Center, and an artistic spring to the students’ steps. The walls of the walkway are comprised of steel, with selectively in-filled glass plates. The translucent, colored panels are imprinted in spirited Ohio University graphics that give the Chillicothe Campus—and its Shoemaker Bridge—an identity all its own.
